“I didn’t just want to build a business. I wanted to build a connected, prosperous Gambia.”
Born and raised in The Gambia, Muhammed Jah understood from a young age that connectivity was the missing piece in his nation's development. He pursued a degree in Computer Hardware and Software Engineering, then honed his skills at Denmark Telecom – gaining invaluable international experience. But his heart never left home. In 2004, he returned to The Gambia with a vision: to bring the internet to every Gambian.
At a time when internet access was a luxury, Muhammed founded QuantumNET – The Gambia's first Internet Service Provider. It was a bold, risky move. Many doubted. But he believed that digital access would unlock education, business, and governance. QuantumNET succeeded, becoming the authorised Samsung partner and setting the standard for electronics and IT services in the country.
Muhammed didn't stop at connectivity. He realised that true progress required an ecosystem – telecommunications, banking, media, education, and logistics working together. In 2009, he launched QCell, the only Gambian-owned GSM operator, which later became the first in the nation to offer 3G, 4G LTE, and even 5G. He then expanded into Islamic banking with AGIB Bank, mobile money with QMoney, and broadcasting with QTV and QRadio. Each subsidiary was designed not just for profit, but to fill a critical gap: affordable banking, financial inclusion, national news, and recreation (QCity).
His leadership style is hands‑on, yet empowering. He built teams that share his passion for excellence. Under his guidance, QGroup has grown to over 1,000 employees and now operates across The Gambia and Sierra Leone – and through Redcoat Express, even the UK and USA.
Muhammed Jah's impact has been recognised nationally and internationally. He has received the African Leadership Award for Entrepreneur of the Year, The Gambia's Man of the Year, and the National Order of the Republic of The Gambia (MRG). He also serves as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea. Yet, he remains humble – serving on foundations for Islamic education and health, always giving back to the community that shaped him.
Today, Muhammed Jah continues to push boundaries. The recent launch of the QCell National Data Centre and the deployment of 5G are not just business milestones – they are national achievements. His story is far from over. The QGroup is poised to expand further, bringing Gambian excellence to the rest of West Africa.
